I am completely an utterly in love with what QOTSA (Queens of the Stone Age) are up to at the moment in the run up to their 6th studio album. They’ve been drip feeding us tracks from the album, attached to rather creepy animated videos.
The artwork is by UK artist “Boneface”. His work’s awesomely gritty, and slightly photo-realistic whilst at the same time being illustrative. If you want to check him out, here’s the link - http://www.boneface.co.uk/
What I think I like the most though is the character design and the whole concept of these videos leading on to each other forming a cycle (let me explain). The opening scene in the first video, “I Appear Missing”, is also the final scene of the final video, “My God is the Sun”. The idea is that 4 of these videos follow the individual stories of 4 separate characters who all end up dying gruesomely, only to be resurrected by a giant flying skull…Epic.
Other than that, the song names and some of the lyrics are just pretty interesting as well. Names such as “Kalopsia” which means that everything appears more beautiful than it actually is. The song name “I Appear Missing” is awesome because of the fact it’s a paradoxical statement (I think that’s right), and contradicts itself. There’s also a couple of lyrics from “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” I really like - “The view from hell is blue sky. So ominously blue. Day dream until all the blue is gone” (it’s cooler when you hear them sung along to the melody…).
